Johannesburg – South Africa's FIFA World Cup preparations have been dealt an unexpected setback after visa complications delayed Bafana Bafana's departure to Mexico, triggering a strong response from Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie.
The national team was scheduled to travel to Mexico ahead of a friendly international against Jamaica and the start of their World Cup campaign. However, administrative challenges involving travel documentation for a number of players and officials prevented the squad from leaving as planned.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) acknowledged the difficulties, confirming that visa-related issues had affected the team's travel arrangements. The association said it was working urgently to ensure that the squad reaches Mexico as soon as possible.
The development has drawn sharp criticism from McKenzie, who described the situation as embarrassing and called for immediate accountability.
"I need a report and action must be taken against those responsible for this mess," the Minister said.
McKenzie also expressed concern about the impact the delay could have on the team's preparations, arguing that players and coaching staff should be concentrating on football rather than dealing with administrative obstacles.
The Minister's comments reflect growing frustration among supporters, many of whom have questioned how such an issue could arise just days before the start of the world's biggest football tournament.
The visa complications are believed to involve travel requirements linked to multiple host nations. South Africa's World Cup schedule includes matches in both Mexico and the United States, meaning players, coaches, and support staff must have the necessary documentation to enter each country.
Officials from government departments have reportedly become involved in efforts to help resolve the matter and ensure the team can travel without further delays.
The timing of the setback is particularly concerning given the importance of Bafana Bafana's scheduled friendly against Jamaica. The match is expected to serve as the team's final competitive preparation before they face tournament hosts Mexico in their opening World Cup fixture on 11 June.
South Africa enters the tournament carrying the hopes of millions of football fans and will be making its first World Cup appearance since hosting the global showpiece in 2010. The country is one of ten African nations participating in the expanded 48-team competition.
The travel disruption also comes as the national side looks to regain momentum following a series of mixed results. Bafana Bafana recently played out a goalless draw against Nicaragua, a result that extended their winless run and left supporters eager to see an improved performance on the world stage.
With the World Cup fast approaching, attention is now focused on how quickly the visa issues can be resolved and whether the team will have sufficient time to complete its final preparations before opening its campaign against Mexico.
