MPUMALANGA – 29 May 2026 – President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to officially launch the national rollout of Lenacapavir, a new long-acting injectable HIV prevention treatment, on 5 June 2026 in Secunda, Mpumalanga.

The launch marks a significant step forward in South Africa’s ongoing efforts to reduce new HIV infections and strengthen the country’s response to HIV/AIDS. Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injectable prevention option, offers a new approach to HIV prevention by providing long-lasting protection with only two injections per year.

The introduction of Lenacapavir is expected to expand access to HIV prevention services and support the country’s goal of ending HIV as a public health threat. The rollout reflects collaboration between government, civil society organisations, development partners, donors, and the private sector.

President Ramaphosa will be joined by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu, provincial health MECs, representatives of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), development partners, and donor organisations, including the Global Fund.

Health experts have described long-acting HIV prevention options as an important advancement, particularly for individuals who may find it difficult to adhere to daily prevention medication. The launch is expected to provide further momentum to South Africa’s HIV prevention programmes and contribute to reducing the number of new infections nationwide.

The event in Secunda will highlight the country's commitment to innovation in healthcare and its continued efforts to improve public health outcomes through strategic partnerships and access to modern medical interventions.

Q24 News Network (Q24NN) will continue to follow developments and provide updates on the national rollout of Lenacapavir and its impact on HIV prevention efforts across South Africa.
